2019 La Maldición de Madrid Rompecepas Tinto Fino
Madrid, Spain While it might not be on the tip of our tongue when it comes to Spanish wine, Madrid has started to muscle its way into the picture in recent years, with Marc Isart, winemaker of Cinco Léguas (formerly La Maldición) very much a reason for that. Northwest of the sprawling city, he made his name at the now-famed Bernabeleva, revolutionizing the estate and creating mesmerizing Garnacha-based reds and native Albillo-based whites. Now here in the mountainous areas of the Arganda subzone, a short ways south of Madrid, he’s doing it all again but this time with single vineyards of Tinto Fino, otherwise known as Tempranillo. He says he’s looking to make wines that are “more savory than sweet” and “hard to stop drinking”, and with the finished product here boasting some distinct spice, rustic earthiness, and plush dark fruits, we’re definitely reaching for the next glass.
