The wines of Gaacher Himmelreich often challenge those from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, frequently in hot, dry years. Presenting a pronounced minerality, tight - athletic acidity, with delicate stone fruit and white florals on the nose. Looking at the vineyard conditions, the hill faces slightly more westwards than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, providing a more south-west exposure, it is a little less inclined and has deeper soils comprised of deep weathered Devonian slate.

2019 Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

The great Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard that is Prüm's most famous. This site lies opposite the village of Wehlen on a very steep, south-west facing slope between the Graach and Zeltingen vineyards. Mostly planted to to ungrafted vines - on top of a thin topsoil over Devonian slate (Some areas of the vineyard have vines growing out of pure rock) The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr generally possess excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavours, a fine minerality and great depth and length. The 2019 vintage shows the retention of these hallmarks - bright acid, attractive green apple with licks of spice on the nose. The finish long, clean and engaging.

Round and piquant on the palate, this is another filigreed and crystalline Kabinett with an intense, compact and very promising finish. The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is looking energetic and thoroughly persistent. Mango, candied orange peel, spice and licks of blackberry on the nose. Lively acidity is seamlessly interweaved with a smooth, creamy palate. There's weight in the fruit which isn't forced or overpowered, still maintaining a vibrant freshness. We cant wait to see this in 10+ years.
"The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is deep and intense on the nicely reductive yet concentrated and spicy-mineral nose that reveals a flinty/crunchy slate aroma with generous but elegant and refined fruit and subtle grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this Auslese displays a fine raisin aroma of perfectly ripe and overripe Riesling grapes, whereas the textured is highly finessed and beautifully balanced. These extraordinary, botrytis affected wines can live and evolve for an age. Prum's 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Goldkap Auslese is no different. Stronger, hand selected grapes containing higher concentrated juice are used for the Goldkapsel cuvees. Multi-layered and deeply complex notes of yellow stone fruit, spice and honeyed florals. The palate proves delicately creamy and just a touch decadent. Zippy acid plays off this, leading to a long complex finish. Approachable and brilliant now, with time - this will be a stunning GK Auslese.
