Laphroaig 10yo Whisky
Islay’s (like eye-lah) potent whiskies divide drinkers. Key to their character is their use of peated malts. Here, barley is sprouted then dried, fuelled by fire made by burning peat, the decomposed moss found throughout many parts of Scotland.
Laphroaig (like lah-froyg) of Port Ellen, are standard-bearers of this Islay character. Think smoke, oily power and burly shoulders. Dutch salt liquorice and original Fisherman’s friends mingle with savoury nori-like notes. A battering kaleidoscope of scents, flavours and textures. Not unlike its windswept distillery buildings.
Like a breakwater, they absorb buffeting wild winds and seaspray. Still feeling adventurous? Employ its structure with dark meat dishes like venison, or simply sip slowly, and contemplate.
