2016 Telmo Rodriguez Bueno de Diario Corriente Rioja
Telmo Rodriguez is a man who has done much to contemporise the extraordinary history, not just of Rioja but Spanish wine itself. This region might in past decades have unwittingly done much to turn off its drinkers, but the pendulum swings seem to be settling in the right spots these days.
His Corriente Bueno de Diario is a sourcing of fruit from the higher altitude village of Lantziego. Fermentation and ageing is carried out in a mix of concrete, steel and oak to best highlight the integrity of these old vines and the joy and flavour in their fruit.
Vintage 2016 makes this even more prolific, with lavender stalks, smouldering plummy vibrant fruit and just a few echoes of bitter chocolate and cocoa.
Grill up some lamb chops and a couple of quality pork sausages and you’ll get why ‘new’ Rioja is flourishing.
