2016 Chêne Bleu Astralabe
~ Modern yet respectful Rhône
The Rhône Valley is a centuries old, cultural super highway. Perched at the axis of the valley, Chêne Bleu is a stunning estate with medieval roots. Situated at the highest point within the Dentelles de Montmirail, the scrubby, jagged limestone peaks linked with the powerful wines of appellation Gigondas .
Painstaking restoration commenced in 1994, and one might best describe these wines as super-Rhônes. But like other now great southern pioneers such as Trévallon and Grange des Pères, the Rolet family forgo the appellation system.
The extraordinary care is evident when you drink these wines. ‘Ripe raspberries and licorice flavours lead into smooth and supple flow of tannins surrounding a lovely warming core of fruit.’
The bold fruit profile can hold up to a flavoursome dish like osso bucco or BBQ's meats.
