Before the whole world went mad for the spritz, this drink was the domain of the Venetians. Select Aperitivo was born in 1920 on Murano, a little island in the lagoon more famous for its fine artisan glass.
Intense, and with more balanced sweetness, Select is the much loved local aperitivo favoured over the larger scale Campari.
The traditional spritz is 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Select and 1 part soda and garnished by a thick slice of orange and a green olive. Locals refer to these drinks as “Shadows,” as they’re often consumed to give respite from the muggy heat of the Venetian summer, in the shade of the bell tower of Piazza San Marco.
