You know the Hunter, and now Canberra, but there have long been exceptional quality wine grapes planted throughout NSW. Sadly, the big companies sourced fruit for brands, but their true origins were rarely given label credit.

Moppity vineyards are in the Hilltops area outside Young, Australia’s cherry capital. These now old vines planted in 1973, were purchased by the current owners in 2004. Initially selling the fruit to other producers, who kept winning awards with it. So they figured they’d better double down on their own wines.

Escalier means staircase, and this 2014 special block selection went right to the top, taking out the Australian shiraz challenge. Consisting of all shiraz , bar a 2% splash of viognier.

This is richly fruited with dense, concentrated red and black plums, a lavender lift and herbal green olive notes from the use of lots of whole bunches. A hefty oak component adds stuffing, which it holds beautifully given the exceptional quality of this fruit. Hilltops - now you know.
