2019 M & C Lapierre Morgon Beaujolais
Now under the care of sister and brother Camille and Matthieu, this important family estate has done much for reputation Beaujolais. Their 18 hectares of old vines among Morgon’s melange soils of granite and sand are known for wines of power, structure and the ability to age. Falling under the local term ‘pinote’, these are wines with the substance, intent and capacity to age for a decade and beyond. Like the best of Burgundy’s pinot. The catch is, that they’re also delicious young!
Vintage 2019 was a rough for the region, with crops halved due to interventions of rain, hail and frost at various points. Fastidious selection of a small, intense harvest in seasons like this, is when good estates showcase their greatness.
And this flagship Morgon is glorious. Too often the case, demand far outstrips supply. So buy whilst you can, whether you’re in it to drink now or bold enough to hold.
