2013 Pierre Labet Beaune 1ER Cru Coucherias
This 7-hectare vineyard lies just a short distance from the Beaune périphérique, on the road to the aptly named village of Bouze-lès-Beaune. This south-facing site above Les Teurons and Aux Cras is the source of some of Beaune's most succulent and seductive red wines. The Labet parcel was planted in 1964 and today forms the basis of the Domaine's massale selection program. 2013 is a prettier, more tensile and aromatic example of Aux Coucherias though still very much in the characteristic Pierre Labet mould of silkiness and layered richness.
"Bright, deep red. Black cherry and menthol on the nose, accented by spices and pepper. Densely packed and sweet but with its silky texture nicely leavened by harmonious acidity and stony minerality. Really spreads out to coat the plate with black cherry, smoke, leather and earth. Finishes with good mineral reserve and lingering salinity. The pHs here in 2013 are in the low 3.2 to 3.3 range, according to Labet. A very good showing; according to Labet, these vines avoided the worst of the hail in 2013."
